Journey To The Jungle

Written by KimF

The sound of African drums filled the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway while a diverse group of senior English students eagerly waited for the Lion King to begin.

Ms. Aarons, Mrs. Cutuli-Block and Ms. Abrahamsen put together the wonderful senior English trip to see the Lion King. The Lion king is based off of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which will be read by the senior English students.

As the Lion King began there was a variety of colors and magnificent animal costumes. The stage lifted and made many twists and turns, spins and rotations while the characters danced around and sang. Each costume was detailed and the actors moved as if they were the actual animal. The actors interacted with the audience by dancing through the isles of the theatre. What appeared to be flying birds soared above the audiences’ heads while African dancers graced the stage with chanting and African dance steps for the opening of the second act.

Review of Dreamland by Sarah Dessen

Written by CarolynK

Staying true to her style, author Sarah Dessen has produced another great piece of work.

Dreamland is a book which shines a light on abusive relationships, a topic that is scarcely mentioned nowadays and often ignored. However, it is a harsh reality and Dessen reveals that, making it clear that abusive relationships need to be taken seriously.

The book is able to successfully paint a picture of the characters and get the reader to care about them, making the story seem realistic.

Instead of just reciting the story, making it a boring plot based book, Dessen writes in a way that actually creates relationships between the reader and the main characters. Writing the book this way enables the reader to feel what the main character feels, a unique quality in a book. Using emotions to keep readers intrigued easily keeps them turning the page, hungry for more.

Dessen also does not waste words. Instead of using lots of flowery language, she describes intense situations with simple language and phrases that really pack a punch. The ability to make powerful writing seem so simple really makes for an interesting and easy read.

The emotion in Dreamland what really make the book so amazing. With such intense situations, the feelings that are applied to the characters seem to literally jump off the page. As I was reading I could feel the fear and weakness of the main character, the concern of her family, and the overall hopelessness of the entire situation.

Overall, Dreamland is a great book, an easy read, and a good way to see the effects of a toxic and abusive relationship.

Call of Duty Review

Written by RyanT

The game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” has taken the world by storm. It had the highest grossing opening day in the history of the videogame history. It has millions of players online daily. But does this gaming phenomenon really live up to the hype?

I came home on Saturday November 14, four days after the game’s initial release, to find this modern day holy grail on my table. I thanked my dad and proceeded to spring to my living room, and got ready to enjoy 53 inches of warlike chaos. I turned on the game, and I was instantly stunned by the overall beauty of the game. The graphics, although this can be overstated, genuinely feels like a movie. It makes you feel like you really are a modern day solider ducking a dodging bullets, grenades, and destructive airstrikes.

However, the true value of this game comes from the online multiplayer. I will tell you this right now: there is no better feeling then calling in a vicious helicopter to unleash hell on the enemy team. Flying supply crates, flash bangs, and predator missiles only add to the total satisfaction in watching the complete destruction around you. It is great to hear total strangers marvel at the amount of “pwnage” you are causing.

The game does have its drawbacks, though. The campaign, the main story mode of the game, is possibly the most difficult thing I’ve tried in gaming, and I’m not even playing on the highest level. The amount of frustrated controller slams and loud expletives is already uncountable. This game, at some points, makes me want to take my XBOX 360 and throw it out of a 45 story building. The frustration this game causes, although at points brutal, is not enough to outweigh the positives. The satisfaction of calling in a stealth bomber far outweighs the frustration of being hit by one. If you are looking for a game that is something you can play seriously with friends, and feel accomplished in doing so, this game should already have been added to you collection.
