Profanity is usually used when someone hurts themselves. Most of the time it accidentally slips out of their mouths, but nowadays students scream across the halls, “shut the #@?*! up you $?*@!”
Wayne Williams (‘10) said, “I feel that people are ignorant when they use bad language. If people can’t say a whole sentence without using foul language I feel that they are lacking knowledge.”
Many see students using bad language having no respect for the school, the staff, or other students. Many times during lunch, a crowd of students wander the halls disturbing other class rooms.
Fourth period bell rings which means that lunch is next, once people get to the cafeteria, they separate themselves from each other by their social groups. Here at Norwalk High School, students decide to segregate themselves by race and grade.
Jessica Barrett (’10) explained, “Yes, students at Norwalk High segregate ourselves, everyone has there little cliques like the bookworms, preppy, and girls with a lot of makeup and their bellies showing. I do not think it is a bad thing, but the need to expand their social life with other students besides their little cliques or circles.”
It seems that when Monday comes around everyone is stressed about school and work. Students all wait for Friday to come so their weekend can begin. Once Friday hits, people are thrilled to get out of school and start their weekend, but even when we get out of school it still feels that we are doing something school related.
It seems that school is inescapable; it surrounds you; it feels like there is no weekend. Many of us are busy with jobs, sports, and other activities. Many students have other responsibilities, I have to babysit my cousins while my aunt is at work and they can be a hand full. On top of that I spend several hours rehearsing for church and practicing for drill team.
Teachers pile up the homework and expect us to get it done, but they need to realize that we have more than one teacher and we have other things we need to handle. An average student has English, math, science, history and maybe Spanish, French, or another world language. The majority of students struggle with a certain subject, and spending several hours on homework.
Our weekends should be spent enjoying ourselves not stressing about school. Students work hard in school, but the time we get to relax becomes all about homework and projects. Two days off just does not seem like enough time away from school. My solution to this problem would be no homework on the weekends, but teachers can give a small amount of homework on the weekends.
In a supportive partnership with the Norwalk community, our mission is to teach skills that will enable students to acquire, access, and apply information. The teachers will foster self-directed learning and good citizenship in a safe environment. All students will be held to high expectations, so they will be successful after graduation.
